Eşref Yıldırım’s Yumak (2009) project, created during Antoni Muntadas' Arada workshop as part of the İstanbul'da yaşıyor ve çalışıyor project, measures publicly accessible and walkable areas along the Bosphorus. Using a rope to gauge the shoreline, Yıldırım creates a ball of yarn for each segment walked, with the performance spanning 12 days—6 on each side of the Bosphorus. The installation features records of the performance on two screens, representing the Anatolian and European shores. Starting in Moda and moving to Anadolu Feneri, then across to Rumeli Feneri and ending at Yenikapı Pier, the walk reveals mostly artificial shorelines. The gallery installation includes color-coded yarn balls for each day and a video of the performance, allowing viewers to reflect on the shoreline segments encountered.
