Fatoş İrwen’s Courtyard Travellers (2019) draws inspiration from the stone walls and historic houses of Diyarbakır, a city in southeastern Turkey with a predominantly Kurdish population where she grew up. Deep brown tones and motifs painted in red and ochre recall earth and clay, as well as the traces of blood shed here — and show how harsh reality and violence are intertwined with human and cultural history. The fragile lines and the visible folding seams mark contrasts between physical strength and mental weakness, between a history of violence and the longing for tenderness. In this work, İrwen brings together memory, trauma, and nature as a hopeful place of longing.
