By intertwining fiction and reality, in Constituting an Island (2014) İz Öztat investigates the effects of myths and official national narratives and how the power is historically built. Since 2010, the artist has been fabricating the (auto)biography of Zişan (1894 – 1970), an enigmatic author who appears to her as a historical figure, a ghost and an alter ego. By interpreting Zişan’s archives, Öztat explores the possibilities of fiction and creates a body of work where the repressed past intervenes with the present.

After encountering the short story “Cezire-i Cennet/Cinnet” (Island of Paradise/Possessed) written by Zişan, Öztat decides to pursue the story of Ada Kaleh, a missing island submerged underwater after the construction of the Demirkapi Dam in 1968. A river island on the Danube River within the borders of present-day Romania, Ada Kaleh was the last Ottoman territory in the Balkans and therefore a place that was highly reclaimed by the Turkish authorities. The video shows a succession of canoes moving in a circular way and tracing the borders of an imaginary island. The video expresses the intention of the artist of searching for something missing, an imaginary potential of a river island erased from the map. Thus the island becomes a speculative element of the history that serves for imagining otherwise.

Bir Ada Teşkil Etmek (2014) adlı çalışmasında İz Öztat, kurgu ile gerçekliği iç içe geçirerek mitlerin ve resmî ulusal anlatıların etkilerini, ayrıca iktidarın tarihsel olarak nasıl inşa edildiğini araştırır. Sanatçı, 2010 yılından bu yana kendisine tarihsel bir figür, bir hayalet ve bir alter ego olarak görünen gizemli yazar Zişan'ın (1894-1970) (oto)biyografisini kurgulamaktadır. Öztat, Zişan'ın arşivlerini yorumlayarak kurgunun olanaklarını araştırır ve bastırılmış geçmişin bugüne müdahale ettiği bir üretim alanı oluşturur.

Zişan'ın kaleme aldığı Cezire-i Cennet/Cinnet (Island of Paradise/Possessed) adlı öyküyle karşılaşmasının ardından Öztat, 1968 yılında Demirkapı Barajı'nın inşasıyla sular altında kalan ve ortadan kaybolan Ada Kaleh'in izini sürmeye karar verir. Günümüzde Romanya sınırları içinde, Tuna Nehri üzerinde yer alan bir nehir adası olan Ada Kaleh, Balkanlar'daki son Osmanlı toprağı olması nedeniyle Türkiye tarafından güçlü biçimde sahiplenilen bir mekândı. Video, dairesel bir hareketle ilerleyen kanoların hayali bir adanın sınırlarını çizmesini gösterir. Sanatçı, bu videoda, kaybolmuş olanın peşine düşme arzusunu ve haritadan silinmiş bir nehir adasının hayali potansiyelini araştırma niyetini ifade eder. Böylece ada, tarihin başka türlü tahayyül edilmesine imkân tanıyan spekülatif bir unsur hâline gelir.
