Reflections in a Golden Eye enlarges and assembles only the eyes of historical figures depicted on international banknotes into a reflective surface. All the eyes, taken from famous figures depicted on banknotes from around the world, often national heroes, with all the implications and limitations this entails, observe the viewer. The golden surface references religious altarpieces and the Baroque tradition of southern Spain, where the artist comes from. Gold, or gilding, carries strong religious and symbolic associations across cultures and artistic traditions. Produced as a UVI print on stainless steel with gold alloy, varnish, and paint, the reflective surface incorporates the image of the viewer. This aspect relates to the title of the work, borrowed from a classic American film, and makes the spectator part of the composition.
