Sena Başöz in Who Does the Sky Belong To? workshop

Sena Başöz and Serra Tansel led Who Does the Sky Belong To?, a creative workshop held at Pelican House in London on October 3, 2026.

Approaching the sky as both a shared medium of communication and a space shaped by power relations, the workshop explored surveillance, control, and violence, particularly in relation to the colonial histories of the Middle East. Through conversation, writing, and artistic practice, participants developed shared images and narratives while imagining the sky as a space for connection, care, and coexistence.

The workshop emerged from the AHRC-funded research project Coloniality and Communications: British Telecommunications in Mesopotamia in the Early Twentieth Century, led by Professor Burçe Çelik and Dr. Sebastian James Rose at Loughborough University, with Sena Başöz as an artist collaborator. The project investigates the relationship between communication technologies and colonial histories.
