Bringing together students from the HfBK – University of Fine Arts Dresden, the group exhibition Departures, presents the outcomes of a workshop led by Sim Chi Yin as a guest professor.
Focusing on traces, sediments, memories, and legacies, Departures examines photography from both historical and contemporary perspectives. The participating artists take the archive—whether institutional, personal, or familial—as a point of departure, reflecting on personal histories, lived experiences, geopolitical realities, and family narratives. Curated by Sim Chi Yin, the exhibition features works by Lina Backer, Martin Bertelmann, Milan Karnetzky, Yeji Kim, Linus Lenkheit, Yimei Liu, Mahsa Parvizi, Klara Schnieber, Leon Schuster, Angelina Seibert, Ronja Sommer, and Ben Zaha.
Sim also gave an artist lecture on November 18, as part of her ongoing guest professorship at the institution. The talk invited audiences and students to engage with her current research interests, including archives, memory, and the “disobedient gaze.”
