İz Öztat and Pary El-Qalqili's duo exhibition How to Unlearn Obedience? at Galerie Nord Berlin
The exhibition How to Unlearn Obedience? was on view from May 10 to July 12, 2026 at Galerie Nord - Studio | Galerie Nord.
Co-developed by Pary El-Qalqili and Iz Öztat, the exhibition examines the influence of state control in German public schools and conceives of education beyond discipline and subjugation.
El-Qalqili and Öztat draw on a German literary canon that has cultivated obedience as a virtue since the 19th century, was ideologically intensified in Nazi pedagogy, and continues to exert its influence in classrooms to this day in a modified form. They trace the profound imprint of the culture of obedience: its mechanisms of punishment, surveillance, and control, and what it demands of those subjected to it.
