Fatoş İrwen’s solo exhibition Beginning at Forum Kunst at the German Bundestag
The exhibition Beginning by Fatoş İrwen will be on view from December 5, 2025 to February 1, 2026 as part of “Us – 19 fundamental rights. 19 artistic positions. One dialogue space” at the Forum Kunst at the Bundestag. On December 12, 2025, Fatoş İrwen offered a guided tour of her exhibition, sharing insights about her childhood, the gardens of Diyarbakır, her grandfather, and the role of women.
Beginning brings together works by Fatoş İrwen that emerge from her personal experiences and the history of her hometown. Her pieces follow the cracks through which light enters, allowing places, bodies, and materials marked by violence to tell stories of perseverance, freedom, and the continuous flow of life.
The exhibition also builds on İrwen’s contribution to Article 15 of the German Constitution, which addresses questions of property, land, and their relation to the common good. By collecting, layering, dissolving, weaving, or setting materials in motion, she reveals hidden strata of lived experience. Simple materials become carriers of memory, making the past visible and initiating processes of change and renewal.
Beginning shows how fragility and persistence, loss and new beginnings can coexist — and how İrwen’s artistic practice opens pathways to keep moving forward despite it all.
