Itamar Gov presents Olympia in the Cast Collection at Johannes Gutenberg University
Itamar Gov presented his work Olympia as the opening section of the exhibition at the Cast Collection, Institute of Ancient Studies, Johannes Gutenberg University. Positioned as an overture to the exhibition, Gov’s intervention establishes a dialogue between the historic plaster cast collection and contemporary artistic practice.
While the surrounding casts present the seemingly flawless exterior of generals, philosophers, poets, and thinkers, Gov’s work exposes what remains unseen: imagined interiority, fragility, and the marks of time and violence. By metaphorically gathering the “brains” and inner lives of these figures, Gov transforms the classical archive into a site of psychological and historical inquiry.
Through this poetic intervention, Olympia invited viewers to reconsider rigid ideals of perfection and to confront the fractured, vulnerable realities that lie beneath polished surfaces.
