ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ACCOMPANIED BY THE CATALOGUE LAUNCH OF
When I See the Future, I Close my Eyes: Chapter II
with HEBA Y. AMIN, ANTHONY DOWNEY, MAYA INDIRA GANESH, and ANA TEIXEIRA PINTO
Saturday, 30 July 2022, 6 p.m.
Zilberman is pleased to invite you to a round-table discussion taking place on the occasion of the closing of Heba Y. Amin’s solo show When I See the Future, I Close my Eyes: Chapter II, curated by Anthony Downey. This talk will be followed by the catalogue launch of When I See the Future, I Close my Eyes: Chapter II.
How do we understand the transformation of images from their symbolic and representational contexts to their contemporary function as a source of digital data? Taking as its starting point the representational bias of colonial imagery, and bringing together practitioners in the field of visual culture and technology, this panel will explore how the digital image has increasingly become the means to extract, archive and repurpose information. Designed for the purpose of training machine vision and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we will enquire into the degree to which these repurposed 'images' reveal the extent to which the extractive practices of colonialism have become inexorably aligned with corporate interests and neo-colonial economies of data extraction.
Speakers:
Heba Y. Amin, artist and professor of Art, Digital and Time-Based Media at ABK-Stuttgart, Anthony Downey, professor of Visual Culture in the Middle East and North Africa at the Birmingham City University, Maya Indira Ganesh, senior research fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, Cambridge University, and Ana Teixeira Pinto, professor of Art Theory at the Braunschweig University of Art and theory tutor at the DAI (Dutch Art Institut), ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem, Netherlands.
The Round Table Discussion will start at 6.30pm.
The conversation will be held in English.
The accompanying catalogue When I see the Future, I Close my Eyes: Chapter IIincludes contributions by Heba Y. Amin, Anthony Downey, Jürgen Kaumkötter, Lotte Laub, and Dominique Routhier. The show is on view at Zilberman | Berlin until 30 July 2022.
Initially launched in 2020 by Heba Y. Amin and Anthony Downey at the Mosaic Rooms London, When I See the Future, I Close my Eyes is an inter-disciplinary collaborative platform that explores art- and exhibition–making as a methodology for new and ongoing research. Focused on broadening conversations about emerging forms of digital authoritarianism, the evolution of machine vision, and the post-digital futures of the technologies that support asymmetric warfare, the research platform reflects upon the colonial histories of technology and their role in determining models of extraction and Western regimes of visuality.
