Zilberman Gallery is pleased to announce the project exhibition by Pınar Yoldaş titled Superfluous which will take place at the gallery’s project space between 1 October - 12 November 2016.
Philosopher Elizabeth Grosz, in her book “Chaos, Territory, Art: Deleuze and the Framing of the Earth (2008),” claims that Charles Darwin is the first feminist according to his lesser known theory of “Sexual Selection.” His theory highlights the fact that it is females that drive the sexual characteristics of male animals. Darwin gives the example of male birds, with their beautiful colors and ornamented bodies, and their sonorous call for the female. Accordingly, Grosz argues that our notion of beauty comes from the animals.
Grosz further argues her claim as the following: “Art is the revelry in the excess of nature, but also revelry in the excess of the energy in our bodies. So we’re not the first artists and we’re perhaps not even the greatest artists, we humans; we take our cue from the animal world. So what is it that appeals to us? It’s the striking beauty of flowers, it’s the amazing color of birds, it’s the song of birds. In a way, it’s that excess which, I think, is linked to sexuality rather than to creation or production directly.”
In Superfluous, sound and synthetic aesthetic come together to build a connection between Grosz’ theories of aesthetics, mythology and the future of life. With the advances in synthetic biology, a new field of synthetic aesthetics has been born.
Pınar Yoldaş is a cross-disciplinary artist/researcher based in Berlin and Durham, North Carolina. Her work develops within biological sciences and digital technologies through architectural installations, kinetic sculpture, sound, video and drawing with a focus on post-humanism, eco-nihilism, anthropocene and feminist technoscience. Her solo shows include AlterEvolution, Ekavart, Istanbul (2013), An Ecosystem of Excess, Ernst Schering Project Space, Berlin (2014), An Ecosystem of Excess; Aksioma, Ljubljana. Her group shows include ThingWorld, NAMOC National Art Museum of Beijing (2014); Transmediale Festival, Berlin (2014); Tiere und Menschen, Museum Ostwall, Dortmund (2014), Polytech Museum, Moscow (2015), ExoEvolution at ZKM (2015),14th Istanbul Biennial (2015) and Taiwan National Museum of Fine Arts(2016).
