Sim Chi Yin’s One Day We’ll Understand illustrates issue 4 of the Berlin Review (03/07/2025)

Sim Chi Yin’s long-term documentary project One Day We’ll Understand, which explores the remnants of British colonial rule in Malaysia, serves as the visual narrative for the fourth issue of Berlin Review. The launch event will take place on July 3, 2025, at Klosterruine Berlin, featuring a panel, readings, and discussions.

Sim Chi Yin will take part in I Come from the Ruins, the launch event of Berlin Review Reader 4, held on July 3, 2025 at Klosterruine Berlin. Inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s words “I am a force of the Past,” the evening brings together voices that explore memory, history, and decolonial narratives through photography, essays, and literary reflections.

Sim Chi Yin will speak in the panel The Golden Tooth, where she will discuss her photographic contribution to Reader 4, focusing on the visual language of decolonial struggles in Malaysia. The conversation will also feature Eric Otieno Sumba, reflecting on his essay about Johan Grimonprez’s Soundtrack to a Coup d’État and the reluctance to confront colonial legacies. The panel will be moderated by Eliana Kirkcaldy.
