Yane Calovski in Gifts of Friendship (15/05/2026)
Yane Calovski is part of Gifts of Friendship, a group exhibition organised by Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in Poland. Opened on 15 May 2026 and presented across the museum’s ms¹ and ms² venues, the exhibition brings together nearly 150 works donated to the institution between 2024 and 2026 by around eighty artists. The project reflects on the significance of friendship, solidarity, trust, and long-term collaboration in shaping public collections.
Referencing the museum’s own history of collection-building through artists’ donations, Gifts of Friendship reconsiders the relationship between artists and institutions through the lens of gift exchange and mutual support. Curated by Barbara Piwowarska, the exhibition forms part of a broader program at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź dedicated to rethinking the collection as a dynamic and evolving structure shaped through dialogue with artists and audiences alike.
Yane Calovski shows Embroidery (2020), a large-scale spatial drawing made of black-painted birch and aspen rods that expands and contracts with each exhibition space. The work oscillates between sculpture and architecture, functioning as an inhabitable structure that visitors can move through like a three-dimensional drawing. It originates from a small textile piece made by the artist’s mother in the 1970s, which Calovski translates into an architectural system of abstract geometric patterns. In doing so, personal and familial memory is transformed into a public spatial environment.
