Simon Wachsmuth at Schau Fenster Fenster Schau (13/06/2026)

In 1435, the art theorist Leon Battista Alberti coined the metaphor of the painting as a ‘finestra aperta’ – an open window through which painters glimpsed what they wished to depict. It is often associated with openness, transparency, and even transcendence; it represents both the light streaming in and the view out into the world, which, particularly since the Romantic era, has embodied hope, freedom and the desire for change. Equally, it can also be read as a symbol of loneliness and isolation when viewed as a dividing screen between the world and humanity, nature and civilisation.

For the exhibition at Schau Fenster, Tim Trantenroth and René Wirths will invited artists working in various media, to engage with the space in terms of both content and form. The exhibition will be on view at Schau Fenster from June 13 to July 5, 2026.
