Isaac Chong Wai included in the permanent collection of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart (01/07/2023)

Isaac Chong Wai’s work Falling Reversely is acquired for the Collection for the 21st Century of the Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin / Hamburger Bahnhof.

The collection is open to the public from June 16, 2023 until further notice, through a special exhibition, curated by Sam Bardaouil, Till Fellrath and Catherine Nichols. With the new presentation of the collection in the west wing, the Hamburger Bahnhof invites the public to reflect on the role of art and cultural institutions in fostering inclusion, engagement and social transformation.

The work Falling Reversely is directed against institutional violence and assault against Asian people, reversing the moment of falling. The acquired Falling Reversely—Collective Fall 1, 2023 and Falling Reversely—Falling and Dance (Ichi), 2022 are photographic works (archival prints) based on a performance in which the performers share the collective pain of violation, as if practicing a ritual, reclaiming the autonomy of their own bodies.
