Simon Wachsmuth at the exhibition historical materialism at la_oficina (15/09/2023)

When it comes to historical materialism, Marx comes to mind, of course, as does Walter Benjamin’s deft reading. But what do we mean by materialism? What history are we talking about? A diverse bunch of artists, with some common characteristics: the archival impulse, a plastic practice, and the political circulation of their work. We know that a plastic practice involves the transformation of matter, that which can be touched and felt; that which is malleable, also. This materialist, plastic affect is a fine thread connecting what they do—what we do—with what we still sometimes call the plastic arts. Curated by Pedro G. Romero, the exhibition will be on view at la_oficina from 15 September 2023 to 21 January 2024.
