Yaşam Şaşmazer at Cappadox 2024 (23/05/2024)

Each year Cappadox’s Contemporary Art Programme displays artwork in different and new locations in the Cappadocia region, reflecting both the many layered histories and possibilities of the landscape, as well as the curatorial vision to embed the festival and its art programme into the local communities and environment. This year, the festival’s contemporary art program will be realized in loving memory of curator Fulya Erdemci, the founder and drafter of Cappadox Contemporary Art Program whom we lost in 2022, and will welcome visitors until June 13th. Under the theme “Changing Skies”, the contemporary art program will be curated by Kevser Güler. Artists’ interpretations of the cultural and social transformation of the Cappadocia region and of their different forms of perceiving and experiencing this multifaceted geocultural texture.

At Cappadox 2024, Şaşmazer's installation Seeds I-VII will be on display. Seeds I-VII are sculptures made of natural materials such as paper, soil, mud, mushrooms, moss, and algae that depict human bodies enclosed like seeds and on the verge of metamorphosis. This new installation, consisting of seven pieces positioned side by side in a cave in Güvercinlik Valley, pursues the idea of “transforming ourselves”. These multiple sculptures, bearing the abstract form of seeds, suggest the new possibilities that the process of metamorphosis, which began with the Destruction sculpture exhibited at the Cappadox Contemporary Art Programme in 2017, will offer us.
