Neriman Polat at the IN BETWEEN (1997–2003): Fooling Around With Documents exhibition at Depo İstanbul (22/05/2025)
Neriman Polat is featured in the exhibition titled IN BETWEEN (1997–2003): Fooling Around With Documents, on view at Depo İstanbul from May 22 to July 12, 2025. Curated by Nergis Abıyeva, the exhibition brings together selections from the archives of Gülçin Aksoy, Nancy Atakan, Gül Ilgaz, and Neriman Polat.
The exhibition examines how these artists, starting in the early 1990s, sought to move beyond traditional art education by embracing forms of expression borrowed from conceptual art through a collective approach. Taking its title from a sentence found in Nancy Atakan’s archive, the exhibition revisits six collaborative exhibitions organized by the artists. These range from the “Arada” exhibition at Atatürk Cultural Center in 1997 to the “Families Only” exhibition at Karşı Sanat in 2003, which featured an expanded group of participants.
The exhibition highlights concepts such as collaboration and friendship in art production, as well as methods of exhibition-making. It offers an alternative narrative contributing to the historiography of contemporary art in the 1990s, emphasizing the humor and joy shared by the group.
