Zeynep Kayan in the Istanbul Modern collection (21/02/2021)
A video work and three photographs from Zeynep Kayan’s series Constructed, 2015–2017 are part of the permanent collection of Istanbul Modern’s Photography Department. In this series of works, previously presented in her solo show at Zilberman | Istanbul, Kayan subjects her motifs to a process of dislocation, translation and transfer. As Kayan stated in a conversation with curator, writer and art critic Mika Hannula, she transforms a physical space into an analogue collage-montage through abstract visual elements by putting “old and familiar” imagery into a “new and unusual” environment. The resulting prints of the artist, who took this process to another level in her videos, were “changing shape by acting like moving sculptures.”
