Itamar Gov’s new work was on display at the Old Water Tower in Sophia, Bulgaria (12/07/2022)

The site-specific sound and light installation 'Notes from the Loneliest Whale' was on view in the Gallery 359 based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In 1992, a naval station in the Pacific Ocean caught through its underwater hydrophones an unusual singing of a whale at a frequency of 52 Hertz, far out of a whale’s reach or ability to hear. In the course of 12 years of recording, the repeated calls of the 52-Hertz-Whale remained unanswered - singing in a pitch that other whales could never hear or respond to, its destiny was to stay alone forever. Notes from the Loneliest Whale is an immersive sound and light installation based on the recordings of the 52-Hertz-Whale. Taking over the entire five floors of the Old Water Tower of Sofia, it transformed the space into an abstract, parallel dimension in which the loneliest whale in the world is present.
